This was our first Oceania cruise. We usually cruise on NCL, Celebrity and recently on Princess. We wanted to splurge and see how "the other side lives." So this cruise was a lot more expensive than what we are used to paying. We did the Miami loop -- actually two segments Miami to Cartagena (Central America) and then Cartagena to Miami (Carribean). We cruise once (sometimes) twice/year and like 3 week cruises. From a first-time cruiser on Oceania perspective, here are the positives we liked: this was the most beautiful ship we've ever been on, the cabin was gorgeous with lots of storage space and outlets (but a very small bathroom), and balcony furniture felt luxurious. The "small ship" (680 passengers) made it super easy to get on and off at ports (aka no lines in or out). Being forced to share dinner tables actually turned out to be fine and we met interesting people who shared their travel experiences (always inspiring). We also liked free room service (although typically took at least 45 minutes and most deliveries took an hour). We loved the water/sparkling water refill stations all over the ship. This should be industry standard. We also liked the policy of 6 wine bottles passengers can bring on board and no corking fee. Here are the things we didn't like: the food. I like a good salad for lunch and unfortunately the "buffet" only had romaine or a mix of iceberg and romaine, cucumbers and tomatoes (most of the time too ripe/close to rotten so not edible), and carrots. Most of the protein options were deep fried. "Grilled" fish was doused in lots of oil so couldn't handle that. The food options were generally less tasty and not as good as what we usually get on Celebrity, Princess, and NCL. Specialty dinners were much better than regular buffet/restaurant but not better than specialty on NCL. My spouse is a vegan (but will eat vegetarian) and it was more difficult for him to find healthy options. Dinner didn't start until 6:30 (which is later than we are used to). Relied on room service but it was the same food for nearly three weeks. It was also difficult to get good information -- ask three people and get three different answers. Surprisingly, service was not as good as we get on NCL, Celebrity and Princess (e.g., with a few exceptions, everything was a "no" instead of "let me check" or a "yes"). Also, with a small ship, there was very little to do especially on sea days. Because we like a lot of flexibility, good options for healthy food, good service, and activity/entertainment options -- none of which Nautica had, we would not recommend Nautica.
