We very much enjoyed our 12-Night Canary Island sailing aboard the Anthem of the Seas. Our expectations were met or exceeded, and the majority of the CONs presented below were minor compared to the line/ship's ability to do the essentials reliably well and while all are opportunities for improvement, none were "deal breakers" that would prevent us from sailing the line or ship in the future.

Of the competing "entry level" cruise brands that I have sailed (RCCL, Carnival, NCL) this cruise reaffirms my position that I will continue to be most likely to recommend RCCL to a friend or family member and look to them first for future sailings. I feel RCCL is most reliable in providing a positive cruising experience and making things right when expectations are not met.

Port Reviews

Gran Canaria

We had a lovely day on our own at Playa de Las Conteras. It was a very nice beach especially considering how easy it was to walk there from where the ship docks.

La Coruna

Explored on our own. Found it to be pedestrian friendly with good signage. Castelo De Santo Anton was fun to explore and had nice views. The Plaza and adjacent pedestrian only alleys were fun to explore and we always felt safe.

Due to the duration in port we did some exploration on our own and a RCCL shore excursion.

It's a fun city to explore; however, we would pass on the "Lisbon City Tour with Maritime Museum" tour if we were to do this port over. The guide wasn't particularly engaging and because of the bus access restrictions and/or inefficient route planning we spend hours crisscrossing the same parts of the city over and over and only spent about 2 hours of the 5.5 total hours "seeing" the things listed on the excursion description.

The kids loved Rancho Texas (we booked it as an excursion through RCCL). Maybe not the most cultural way to experience the port, but enjoyable for sure and our escort made the most of our driving time providing information about the island.

We picked the RCCL "Royal Windsor with LHR Dropoff" Excursion for debarkation day. The guide was fantastic, maybe it was just bad timing luck, but we "wasted" much of our time waiting in an extremely long line just to access the castle.

Madeira (Funchal)

Due to the distance the ship docks from town, we opted for a RCCL shore excursion for this port. We largely enjoyed "Funchal Highlights and Botanical Gardens" tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. It had some of the inevitable "hurry up and wait for others" aspects that plague large group guided tours, but I felt we got to see a large amount of this amazing island with no planning or stress, which is a win to me.
