Reading the reviews of BOTS prior to the cruise I was concerned about boarding and was expecting a badly maintained ship with poor food and below average entertainment options. Perhaps it was because we were boarding with low expectations but we finished the cruise having really enjoyed the experience - particularly our children (teens and preteens) who loved it.

Firstly on the food . It was pretty good - avocado and poached eggs on toast for breakfast at Windjammers was a good start to the day . To be honest I hate buffets in general but the food offerings were varied and of decent quality . Meals always had a baked meat option - ham for breakfast and turkey, lamb , beef or chicken for other meals. Kids loved the buffet but wife and I generally preferred to pay extra to eat dinner at Chops which is sensational and offered some of the best steaks Ive eaten. The one downside on food front would be Izumis - very disappointing and best avoided.

As for maintenance . While there had been some terrible issues with propulsion system, which impacted some of the cruises prior to this one, there were no such issues during this cruise. The state of the cabin was fine and we had no issues - well maintained, clean and comfortable. The general state of maintenance throughout the ship was exemplary, only issue that affected me was one piece of gym equipment that was out of order.

Port Reviews

Stunningly beautiful. The snorkeling with stingrays and sharks in crystal clear waters was a cruise highlight. Tender process was a little frustrating but distance from port wasn't too far so was a bit quicker than some of the other tender locations

Hire a car (or book a tour) and head to Rotorua to tour the thermal parks, see a cultural show or visit Hobbit town

The tender process here was horrendous. 30 min tender ride to the port from the ship . The ship should have put on at least one more tender . As it was the process took over 2 hours and missed tour.
