We have just returned from a 12 night cruise on Oceania Sirena from Tenerife to Southampton.

Oceania used to be our favourite cruise line both for its itineraries and the quality of the food. We had a particularly memorable 35 day cruise around Australia on the same ship back in 2017. We were on this cruise because we had booked to go on the third cruise of their new ship Vista in 2023 but this was cancelled because the ship wasn’t ready and we had been given a substantial cruise credit in compensation.

We stayed for three nights in Puerto de la Cruz before the cruise in the lovely Hotel Tigaiga. Just before the day of departure we received an email from Oceania’s head office advising that passengers must attend the port immigration office to have passports stamped prior to boarding the ship. We chose to go to the ship first in order to drop off our cases. The embarkation process was the slowest that we have ever experienced in 20 years of cruising. The staff there examined our passports and said that we didn’t need to go to immigration after all and could board immediately, so we did. We had some lunch and later in the afternoon there was a ship’s announcement to say that everyone had to pass through immigration. So we, and other passengers who had been misadvised at embarkation, had to leave the ship to be bussed around to the port immigration office, stand in line, and have our passports stamped. Fortunately this was not too lengthy a business but we were left thoroughly unimpressed with the whole process and the lack of coordination between Oceania and the local port staff.
