We are not seasoned cruisers, but have really enjoyed three previous small ship cruises with Windstar. We were expecting to go up a notch in opting for Silversea, but were sadly disappointed. The one saving grace, was that all the front-facing bar, cleaning, catering and waiting staff were all fantastic, friendly and welcoming.

However, that only demonstrated the contrast with the more senior crew who were frankly hopeless. In 18 days aboard, never once did the cruise director speak to us, nor any other officer. As first timers with this line, we needed some help with understanding how and what on-board activities were available and how to get involved, but with no announcements or members of the entertainments team interested in talking to you, you were left with the App or daily listing . We began to understand that our cruise was just a slice out of a World Voyage and all the focus was on those passengers. This was typified when we tried to join a Bridge session to find that it was a learning course that had been running since leaving San Francisco weeks before, not an option to play some cards on sea days.

The shore concierge desk staff were surly and unhelpful and suggested no alternatives when pre-booked excursions were cancelled. The first we managed to go on was in Singapore which was truly dreadful. Supposedly light activity, we were taken on a march to the gardens and just left for an hour waiting for the nightfall light show, to sit on the ground or stand in the 28c heat with no refreshments or even water. Then similarly dragged through Clarks Quay and squeezed onto a boat from which only 1 in 3 people could see out. Then another route march up and down a hundred more steps for a cocktail on the terrace of a hotel. When I complained to the Manager, she was only concerned that their tour disclaimer might need amending, not that the excursion was totally unsuitable for the typical demographic of a Silversea Cruiser. When I pointed out that the walk from the ship to the bus alone was over 0.5km each way, she merely said that didn't count in the activity level! She did promise to look at our other booked excursions and come back with thoughts, but she never did.
