What a delightful cruise.

Excellent crew/staff on the cruise ship, wonderful excursions. The ship was small and ready for a refurb, but it made good use of the space. I highly recommend Alligators by Night and Rubber Planation and Indigenous Village in Manaus, as well as Piranha Fishing in Santarem. Trinidad was a great port, the friendliest one we visited in Caribean.

Tamarind pop-up restaurant was a great little treat!

Port Reviews

Alter do Chao

We walked into the town instead of buying an excursion and had a great experience. There was cool local art, easy access to boats if you wanted to go for a ride, many shops, including a local artisan shop, and a fun little corner store where we bought local drinks (Guarana Soda!) and a few little Brazilian trinkets. The day was hot, and the walk into town was such that I would not recommend it for people with mobility issues. Right where the tender landed was a little dock and a few steps on the sand took you to a building with wifi and a dew seats, directly following this was a little set up of stalls where some shirts, art, jewellery and tourist type things were sold.

If you stay on the main streets I would say this was a safe port for some self directed exploration.

St. Maarten

We loved the easy-to-access passenger ferry close to the port.

Once crossing over on the ferry, we did some shopping before settling down on the beach - we went to Big Bastards Bar where we had access to wifi, lounge chairs and a drink for a reasonable price, 20USD per person. The beach was white side and the water was perfect. We even saw a cute little turtle popping up beside us in the ocean.

There was lots to explore, a church, local shops as well as the usual (Effy, DI, Croc etc), and taxi's were easy to get. as this was our first port, and easy enough to navigate on your own we picked to do a beach day instead of an excursion. It was perfect for us, and a great first port for our vacation.
