My wife & I have wanted to do a repositioning cruise for some time, and have just returned from a wonderful Viking Ocean transatlantic voyage from Ft. Lauderdale to Barcelona March 2 ~ 16, with stops in St. Martin and Madeira. We used Viking Air throughout, and upgraded to Delta One on the long return flight. We stayed overnight the day before at the Embassy Suites 17th Street, Ft. Lauderdale, a 15-min. drive to the cruise terminal, which was a breeze because the Embassy Suites is partnered with an inexpensive shuttle bus company which took us directly to our ship, the Viking Ocean Mars, where porters whisked our luggage into the terminal for easy Viking pre-board processing. We were onboard and into our Penthouse Jr. Suite port side within 15 min. of our assigned boarding time. We are experienced cruisers, but this was our first Viking trip, and from start to finish we were impressed at every aspect of our experience. The dining was superb in all of the venues, and our 6 specialty restaurant meals in the Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s were a perfect place to celebrate our 55th anniversary, and our birthdays. The food presentation and quality was really great, and the wait staff always friendly, remembered our names, and very professional. On this transatlantic we had lots of sea days, and the program staff filled many of them with interesting historical lectures of ports and the region, and fun activities which anyone could join into. The evening stage shows were well done, well attended, and toned nicely for the age and interests of the passengers aboard. Our cabin stewards were excellent, and kudos go to JoJo and Harvey for all they did to make us welcomed. We only stopped for a day each in St. Martin and Madeira en route to Barcelona, and our shore excursions were well planned, effortless, and interesting. Barcelona both ended our cruise, and capped off a very pleasant journey, with smooth disembark provided by Viking transfer. The 10-hour flight home with Delta One lay-flat beds was perfect, and well worth the upgrade. All-in-all, we have become so impressed with this Viking experience that we’ve already booked our next Viking trip, with a lot of reason to anticipate our next adventure!

Cabin Review

Penthouse Junior Suite with Balcony

We had a Penthouse Jr. Suite on the port side. Quiet, full balcony view, near the forward elevators, with little wave motion. The Mars ship is only 2 years old, so the beautiful decor, furniture, and bed comfort was like being in new-ship luxury.

Port Reviews

Madeira (Funchal)

Took the "Best of Madeira" shore excursion, which covered the entire island well, but was 8 hours long and everyone appeared dragging at the end. A good overview of a tropical playground.

Barcelona

Did the "Iconic Barcelona" 4 hour shore excursion, which was a small taste of a very historic, beautiful, and clean city.
