Cabin: Mini-Suite with Balcony

This was our 4th Princess cruise and we really wanted to see the Panama Canal. The Ruby was a good choice, not too big. We know that it will always be a struggle to get a pool deck lounge chair or a table on the pool deck. The deck above the pool usually had lounge chairs available. The Panama Canal passengers were mostly over 50, many with walkers or scooters.

This time we chose a mini-suite because with 10 days on board we wanted to sit on a sofa, rather than always sit on the bed. The larger balcony and full sized bathroom were very nice. Everything was clean. Twice we had toilet issues, but the problem was quickly fixed. Our cabin steward was cheerful and competent. The TV had a good selection of programs.

The dining was fine, we did not have reservations and at most waited 5-10 minutes for a table for 2. The kitchen did a good job with fish dishes, other meals looked nice but lacked flavor. The best meals for us were the beef choices: sirloin, tenderloin, etc. Very tender and cooked properly. Sometimes the service was a bit slow, but we were not in a hurry. The buffet was okay, I found the Indian vegetarian dishes with rice to be a good choice every time. Many other "hot" items were lukewarm. The best times at the buffet were the international food nights in the Caribe area. The Indian, British, German and Italian foods were great. In either dining venue, it took a while to get alcoholic drinks or sodas. The poolside pizza, burgers and ice cream were good. We did not visit the specialty restaurants. The Salty Dog Gastropub looked interesting but the menu was a bit too adventurous for my spouse. That said, the place was quite crowded.

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Big and clean mini-suite cabin. Roomy bathroom. Enjoyed the bigger balcony. Sofa was old and not comfortable, but we sat on it anyway. Bed was very comfortable.

Port Reviews

Cartagena (Colombia)

Very good tour of the fort, walled city and a boat tour of the city sights. Cesar, our guide, was very informative and there was a rest stop with air conditioning and a place to sit.

Limon Bay

We took a canal boat ride and saw all sorts of birds and sloths. Then a train ride through the rainforest with lots of howler monkeys to see. We learned about Costa Rica history and banana plantations. Percy was a great guide.

Took a trip to the Green Grotto caves. We enjoyed learning about the history of Jamaica and the caves were interesting. Camisha, our guide, was quite good and cheerful.

Panama Canal

Stayed on board during our canal visit. The onboard canal expert was quite interesting, and relaxing in Lake Gatun was a very nice day. We had read many reviews of tours returning very late to the ship, so due to health reasons we chose not to be stuck on a bus for hours.
