We were aboard the Viking M/S Antares for a Nile River cruise, round trip from Luxor. The Viking tour actually begins and ends in Cairo with land excursions.

The ship has a traditional design and the interior is very warm with lots of wood and marble finishes. The french balcony stateroom was extremely large (430 sq ft) and very comfortable. Our cruise was about 2/3 full with only 44 guests so we were very much spoiled by the staff. The cuisine was delicious and plentiful with a menu including Viking every day dishes, Egyptian cuisine, and other specials. For the Aswan sail away lunch the chef and staff prepared a delicious BBQ on the sundeck. There was also a special Egyptian meal served family style.

Viking has the cruise logistics down to a science. We had dedicated guides/Egyptologists for the entire tour package (both aboard ship and in Cairo). Viking had a security bubble including armed guards on the busses and accompanying tourist police vehicles, we felt safe at all times.

Cabin Review

Our 430 sq ft stateroom was spacious and very comfortable. There are full height sliding windows that we occasionally opened to view the river.

The vessel was constructed some time ago and does not have all the USB and electrical outlets found on modern vessels. There is only one open plug in the stateroom and the reception desk can provide an extension box, or I recommend you bring your own multi plugin box. Also, if you get up at night bring a night lite for the cabin.
