I did HAL's Alaskan itinerary out of Vancouver, visiting Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, and Ketchikan. This is an absolutely beautiful part of the world, and definitely well worth it if you're thinking about going. Since I'm in Canada, having the option of departing from a domestic port (thus a domestic flight) is nice.

The Ship: 4/5

The Volendam is one of the oldest ships in HAL's lineup. Built in 1999 but refitted somewhat more recently. While she does feel a bit dates in some areas, especially the main dining room, this is probably the closest experience you'll get to an ocean liner. At least not without going on Cunard. Most areas have a subtle touch of class and refinement to them, without being overbearing or gaudy. A contrast to the floating malls popular today, this is the classic cruising experience. It's pretty small by modern standards, but cozier and easy to get around. Great for travelers who don't like large crowds.
