We just returned from the most incredible cruise of the western Mediterranean on the Viking Saturn! The ship was luxurious, clean, well staffed and very well organized. We stayed in a Penthouse Veranda suite which was spacious and so comfortable. The bed was perfect and we had no trouble sleeping, especially with the very effective and attractive blackout curtains. Our favorite food venues were Manfredi’s and the Restaurant. We did not have the same positive experience at The Chef’s Table with the Mexican night fare. The food was not appealing. The food choices at the other dining options,, including the Cafe, were varied and sumptuous at each meal. We also loved stopping by Mamsens for the delicious morning waffles topped with fresh fruit and the fabulous pea soup which was only available after 10PM. The cabin stewards (as well as all the ship’s staff) were so friendly and willing to accommodate our every need or request including cleaning our cabin twice daily. We especially appreciated the Viking reps who handled our airport transfers and made sure our luggage was delivered right to our cabin. We took advantage of the included excursions and found them to be educational, interesting and valuable. We walked a lot each day but never felt stressed. The tour guides were knowledgeable and personable. We loved the fact that everything on Viking is included with no sudden “surprises” added to our bill at the end of the cruise, which is typical of other cruise lines! One of the best features is the free washers and dryers with complimentary detergent! That was a real benefit especially as it takes away the need to pack so many extra items in case clothes get dirty or stained. We would highly recommend the 3 day post extension in Tuscany at the Villa Il Poggale! What a gorgeous 14th century villa with spacious rooms and bathrooms that are exquisitely decorated. The meals were all homemade including excellent berry tarts, pasta, and cheesecake! This was considered the “off season” which turned out to be wonderful as there were the sites had few tourists and the weather was between 60-65*F everyday with only 1/2 day of light rain through the entire cruise. I wish we had taken the recommendations of others and stayed two days before the cruise in Barcelona as that would have allowed us to explore more of this magnificent city but also afforded us more than just a few hours to adjust to the time difference. Overall, I would say this was the best vacation and cruise we’ve ever taken and can’t wait to book another Viking cruise! I would definitely recommend using a travel agent as our agent took care of all the arrangements and details, and we didn’t have to stay on hold or make additional calls to confirm reservations or to ask questions. There is no added cost when using your own travel agent over booking online or through Viking. We’re already signed up for a future Viking cruise!

Barcelona

Stunning city with a remarkable morning market to explore and the amazing Cathedral. Be sure to buy tickets weeks ahead of time to be able to see the interior. Tickets are hard to come by!
