Sail Date: Jan 2024
Traveled with children

We were excited but apprehensive. We had decided not to sail the Symphony again because of the age of the ship and the HVAC issues. Given that this was a newer ship we decided to take the Jan 5 Caribbean cruise as we truly missed sailing on Crystal (had gone on over 35 segments).

The positives: Rooms have been nicely redone and we paid up for the Sapphire suite which was spacious, well laid out and appointed. Much of the staff has returned but there were some beginners and it showed in some service. The seasoned folks have aged along with us and looked it. The food was outstanding compared to any luxury ship i've been on (Regent, Seabourn both had abysmal food in my opinion). Umi Uma (a Nobu restaurant) was a trip down memory lane and we ate there 4 times in 2 weeks. Osteria, the Italian restaurant was disappointing. My opinion was supported by the half empty tables, while there was a wait list for Umi Uma. I mentioned this to the Hotel Director and he said they had just finished a meeting to revamp the menu. Hopefully it will restore some of it's former glory. They used to have a marvelous mushroom soup served in a bread bowl and beef tarter with aged balsemic that was second to none. They had some version of both in Waterside but not every night. The library was staffed and well stocked although one staffer was ignorant of where things were?

The not so great: The ship shows its age. There were rust stains around the exterior of the ship, no umbrellas on the Marketside dining area (they had rotted), the seats in the Saloon sagged from age, the cushions on the back decks were gone, towels were in short supply. They removed the Casino and left a big empty space with tables and chairs that felt forlorn every time i walked by. The movies were current and generally interesting (except for the marvel genre), but they only but a few cups of popcorn out, so it was gone quickly. A small of important difference from the old Crystal. The price of the cruise was high given that i don't drink. The average age was 5 years higher than when i was on 5 years ago (meaning their past fans are aging out. I wonder who they'll replace them with.
