This review is primarily about our cruise sailing on the Journey, however it also describes our experience with Celestyal Cruises and sets the scene prior to sailing with them.

We had not heard about Celestyal Cruises (CC) before and were enticed by a reasonably priced 14 night itinerary with great inclusions (premium drink package, gratuities and four excursions). We booked 16 months prior to the departure date, expecting to do the Steps of St. Paul (7 nights) and Three Continents (7 nights) cruises back to back, in a combined package. Four months prior to departure, CC changed the dates of the cruise, bringing them forward a week. As changing flights was prohibitive, we negotiated with CC to do a shorter four night cruise in the first week, to upgrade our cabin and to receive US$ $200 on board spending. On one hand, this outcome was good, but on the other, it was much more expensive (but cheaper than changing flights).

We liked cruising on the Celestyal Journal. It had been recently refurbished and by the time we embarked on the ship, the problems noted in other reviews were not evident. The decor was updated. All the staff were MARVELOUS. The food was good, but not exceptional. That said, we were amazed at all the different yummy and scary desserts made to celebrate Halloween. The entertainment was fair to good - typically dancing, singing and acrobatics on the stage. We enjoyed the excursions but only purchased the ones to places more difficult to get to. It's important to be aware of the level of physical fitness required and the terrain walked on. Some excursions required walking up and down hundred of steps or on uneven terrain. Also, to hear what was being said by the tour leader we were given headsets. We appreciated the care for our safety by CC when on excursions.

Cabin Review

The cabin was a good size for two people, very comfortable, clean, in good working order and had plenty of towels. There were closets and drawers to store clothing and suitcases. We made regular use of the roomy balcony. The king-size bed was very comfortable with good bedside lighting for reading. As we had been traveling for awhile, the clothesline in the bathroom was well used. The cabin was located on the ninth floor and, despite being near the elevators, it was surprisingly quiet. We had cabins above us and seating for a small specialty restaurant below. It is important to check what's above, below and across from you when choosing a cabin. Nightly we looked forward to the traditional Greek sweets left on our pillows, along with the funny towel animals on the bed. A bonus to having a junior balcony suite or other suite is having access to a special dining area where you have your own designated wait staff. Our only complaint about the cabin was the lack of English channels other than the BBC News on the TV.
