My wife and I are generally ocean cruise fans, but we took this trip in order to explore the history of Egypt. It's hard to imagine a better itinerary than the one organized by Viking. One of the highlights was Nefertari's tomb. Admission is limited to 100 visitors a day, and on the day we visited over half of those were our fellow passengers. The tour guides (Program Directors in Viking parlance) were all PhD Egyptologists, and our guide Dina was the cream of the crop. Her knowledge of and passion for both ancient and modern Egypt were profound and inspiring. The beautiful ship itself is only a few months old, and is immaculate. All the crew were clearly committed to providing the finest possible experience to the passengers. Chef Mario Dias deserves special recognition for his culinary expertise. We were somewhat concerned because the food options on an intimate river vessel are necessarily more limited than those on an ocean vessel, but everything was of such high quality that this was never an issue. Our cruise included two nights at the Cairo Fairmont at the beginning of the trip and one night at the Cairo InterContinental at the end, and these were top notch as well. My only caveat is that there is a great deal to see on this trip, and if you take advantage of all the offered excursions you'll be fairly busy every day, especially during the first half of the itinerary. My advice is to embrace it and immerse yourself. This classic cruise is not to be missed!
