This was our 18th cruise and our 3rd with NCL. We selected back to back cruises because of the itineraries, intensive Japan and Philippines beginning in Tokyo and ending in Singapore. Within 24hrs of booking with our travel agent an NCL representative phoned us to check the contents of our package and begin the upselling process. This caused some confusion regarding what our package actually included and this took an additional couple of calls to resolve. Over the next 18 months NCL sent us various emails, each one in triplicate for some unknown reason. Some were about changes to ports being visited and some were about changes to excursions we’d booked, but in many cases it was difficult to work out what exactly had changed. We booked all of our excursions on the NCL website which at best we would describe as average. A few weeks before boarding NCL sent us a link to check visa requirements but it did not work. My husband checked our visa requirements for all the destinations on the website. It was here he discovered that we would need to complete an arrival form for Philippines, Brunei and Singapore. My husband phoned NCL to find out if the ship would be submitting the arrival forms on our behalf. After some back and forth with Customer Services, their answer was to do them ourselves. We could only do these up to 72hrs before arrival in the country. Imagine our surprise when we received an email from NCL instructing us to complete the forms before embarkation which was impossible for us as we were “back to back” leaving us worried we would not be allowed on the ship. We completed our pre-embarkation forms online.

Cabin Review

Mid-Ship Balcony

We booked Balcony Cabin. First impression was that it was fairly small with limited storage for our possessions. The bathroom was a nice size with a full size shower. The sofa bed just cluttered the room up meaning there was only one bedside table for the two of us. It was poorly set up for spending any time in. There was a fridge but once we’d used the complimentary cartons further water was chargeable. We were very surprised there was no evening turndown service and the bed linen was only changed if you request it. This was not made clear at the outset and we only found out by enquiring when it would be changed. One of our sheets had a hole in it and was dated 2017. We asked for it to be changed and it turned out the clean set had holes too. There was no “handbook” in the room so we didn’t know what services were available, e.g. you could request to borrow an iron and ironing board. We only discovered this was an option when we saw one standing outside another room. Our steward was lovely.
