Almost crusing on the flooded Rhine River, but not a total loss thanks to Viking's superior management and resourcefulness.

This was our first cruise of any sort and we wanted to experience the Swiss, German, and French Christmas Markets while being pampered on the beautiful Viking River ship Idi. However high water on the Rhine River due to previous heavy rains and snow melt caused flooding and prevented our ship from passing under bridges on the Rhine River. Instead we were bused to Strasbourg, France where our ship was in safe port.

We spent several days and nights in Strasbourg and were bused to various delightful Christmas Markets along the Rhine River. The tour manager also arranged a short cruise up the Rhine River to view dozens of castles along the river gorge. So the Rhine River cruise was not a total loss thanks to Viking's quick response to contend with the high water issues to make our journey interesting and enjoyable.

We were then bused to Koblenz, Germany on the Moselle River where we boarded the Idi's identical twin sister ship located a short distance up river. A very seamless transfer was made with our luggage and we for all practical purposes were on the same ship we were on earlier. Fortunately the river level on the Moselle had dropped low enough for our new ship to pass under the bridges and sail to Trier, Germany over several days per the original schedule.

Cabin Review

Veranda Stateroom

A very nice room with plenty of space. The veranda in the winter with rain was not used.
