You learn a lot about a cruising company when something doesn't go to plan, and Avalon's poor decisions have prompted us with the final verdict of "0 stars, never again". Our Christmas Market cruise was dramatically altered due to high water conditions on the Danube. Avalon was faced with the same dilemma as other cruise lines, and as you'll read, failed across the board with their response.

After an almost five hour drive to Nuremberg we got situated in the lounge room, enjoyed celebratory drinks, and fun introductions to the entire crew. At this point we were excited about what was coming. A moment before breaking for dinner, after a toast from the Captain, the Captain himself mumbled through an explanation about high water on the Danube. We could barely make out what was happening at which point the Cruise Director informed us that we would be going with "Plan B". He told passengers that there would be compensation along with minimal impacts to the overall itinerary, and that we should just stick it out and wait until tomorrow.

A key piece of information here is that he told us, all stunned at the turn of events, that we could get a full refund if we left tomorrow or a 50% refund on the cruise price for the days we would be completely off the ship. Initially we thought this was fair, but only later realized how deceptive Avalon was being. See, he, similar to the Captain, mumbled through the exact reimbursement, slyly saying "50% of the cabin fare". Why that matters is simple. On a roughly $11,000 cruise, $10,000 of that is part of the "vacation fare" where only $1000 is part of the cabin (these numbers are being averaged).
