This was a Specialty Cruise- Festive Christmas Markets, which are a very important part of the European holiday tradition. This was our first time on Avalon and experiencing the markets. We arrived an extra day early in Amsterdam to be able to see the Van Gogh and Anne Frank Museums. This and the Zans Schans excursion and the 9 streets area, as well as the Winter Festival of Lights Cruise, were so important to us to experience Amsterdam properly. We were treated like royalty on our cruise. Gayle was an outstanding director- very empathetic and forward thinking. From the beginning, she clearly communicated that our plans might have to change in the last half of the cruise due to rising water from too much rain. We enjoyed every Christmas market that wasn't on a weekend. Many cities have multiple markets close together. Gayle spent countless hours making sure we could do our selected excursions through slightly longer bus rides, especially the visit to the Black Forest and Cuckoo Clock Shop, which competitors had dropped. We only missed 1 night aboard Panorama and that was in a beautiful hotel the last night in Basel, with all of our food comped. I can't say enough about the attention to detail and the congenial atmosphere created on board by the crew. Yes, it rained a lot, but we made the most of it. Yes, there was one snafu not of Avalon's making where an unauthorized competitor boat tied up illegally in our spot for a few hours and we had to walk across the top of that boat to get to ours, but every ounce of energy of our Captain and Cruise Director went to rectifying this ASAP. The food was excellent, the rooms are bigger without the small balcony, and we made some friends on board. A Great Cruise! PS, one of us walks with a cane. There is an elevator on board. Another guest had a walker with wheels. While not really set up for wheelchairs, IMO, anyone who has trouble walking who is not in a wheelchair can cruise on this type of boat.

Cabin Review

We loved our cabin. The bed was very comfortable and Avalon has a choice of toppers. Avalon doesn't have the small balcony- instead, the wall of glass is actually sliding glass doors. We opened them and used the room furniture- perfect. Also, the bed faces the glass, not sideways. Another great feature is the bathroom- it is slightly angled, which makes the shower just a little bit deeper so there is room to move around inside without touching the walls. All rooms are suites. We had more room in this than our cruise to French Polynesia on an ocean liner last year. Outstanding!!!
