Embarking on the AMAwaterways Amabella 14-night Grand Danube cruise was a highly anticipated journey, meticulously planned over a year in advance. After a hiatus from international travel since 2014, our expectations were high, especially having previously experienced the luxury of Uniworld River Cruises.

Our adventure took an unexpected turn on the fourth day as my spouse and I fell ill with Covid-19. The response from AMAwaterways was swift but unsettling. Although they suggested a voluntary quarantine in our stateroom for 4-5 days, our condition worsened. By the fifth day, a ship doctor in Vienna confirmed our illness, prompting our decision to return home. Sadly, AMAwaterways declined to provide written confirmation of their quarantine recommendation, complicating our insurance claim.

Throughout this trying time, the staff, notably the ship's hotel manager, Zhivko Georgiev, displayed exceptional service, attempting to navigate our difficult circumstances. However, the cruise's Covid policy mirrored a "don't ask, don't tell" approach, leading to potential risks as other unwell passengers chose silence over disclosure.

Cabin Review

Cabin was a good size, comfortable - however there were no drawers to place our clothes and the bed was non-standard sized king - probably a queen.
