Having cruised Celebrity about a dozen times in the last decade, I have witnessed first-hand the slow decline of a once-great cruise line. But like Bugs Bunny who sees himself as the lollypop "sucker" in the mirror, I now realize that the value proposition -- previously the main reason I selected Celebrity for several vacations a year -- is no longer even close to worth the money anymore.

Celebrity has mastered the sneaky upcharge for everything, virtually DOUBLING the fare once you are forced to pay for all the "extras" that used to be included. And they have slowly gotten rid of all the little things that used to make a cruise feel like a truly all-inclusive vacation.

Champagne upon boarding? GONE. Free room service? Now a $9.95 "service charge" (PLUS a 20% mandatory gratuity). Reasonably-priced drinks? You tell me: is $20.40 ($17 PLUS a 20% "gratuity") reasonable for a martini? Oh, but the "drink package" to make that martini "free"?... Used to be about $400 for a week, now is DOUBLE that: about $130 a DAY once the -- you guessed it -- mandatory 20% "gratuity" is added to the $110 per day price. "For your convenience".
