My husband and I are in our 40's. This was our 5th HAL cruise, but it was our first time back with them since the pandemic. Our last HAL cruise was on the Koningsdam in the Caribbean, and we loved it! We were excited to try out her sister ship in European waters.

PRE-CRUISE

We spent 4 nights at an Airbnb near Termini in Rome. This was our 4th time in the Eternal City, so we skipped the major sights. We spent our time taking day trips by train and visiting city parks. Getting around was very easy.

Verandah Stateroom

We were in a verandah on the port side of Deck 6 between the forward and midship stairwells. There was lots of space and plenty of storage. We ate most breakfasts out on the balcony. The room attendants were fantastic, and we experienced zero issues.

Port Reviews

Dubrovnik

We bought the Dubrovnik Pass for 35 euros each. Not only does this include access to the City Walls (which costs the same price), but you can also visit a number of different sites and use public transit for the day. We were able to take the city bus from the cruise terminal to Pile Gate. The Old Town is beautiful but gets to be a bit repetitive. It is clear that most of the locals have been pushed out in the name of tourism. For lunch, we picked up burek at a takeaway place, and I recommend this tasty local food.

Sarande

This is a tender port. We took a cruise ship excursion to Butrint. On our bus ride there, we were overwhelmed with gasoline fumes. It was so bad, we put our KN95 masks on, but we could still smell the fumes. We ended up taking a different bus back to Sarandë. As for Butrint, it was disappointing. When you look at pictures online, you see beautiful mosaics. In reality, these have been covered with gravel, so you can't see them at all. There are multiple signs in the park telling people not to smoke, but many people do anyway. In fact, fire extinguishers are placed next to all trash cans, and I am guessing this is to put out cigarette fires. After the excursion, we walked along the Sarandë waterfront, which was pleasant.
