Chose this cruise for the itinerary from Hong Kong to Bangkok via cities and remote islands in the Philippines, a brief call in Malaysian Borneo, and two nights in Ho Chi Minh City - fascinating to visit rapidly developing countries under different political systems. We enjoyed most of the included excursions but underestimated the sapping effect of the heat and humidity. For our convenience, we had booked long haul flights, hotels and transfers independently.

Our first Silversea cruise was on this ship in the Baltic in 2016, and it was good to be back. Of course, Whisper is seven years older, creaks even in moderate seas, and the decor with heavy wood finishes now feels quite dated.

Meals in the main restaurant and La Terrazza were always excellent though menus didn’t vary much from day to day; we dined a couple of times on ‘hot rocks’ at the pool Grill (filet mignon or salmon recommended there). Service was prompt and generally friendly throughout, but rather formal, and it would have been nice occasionally to have somewhere to get a snack without being waited on. We appreciated the guest lectures and pre-dinner entertainment and were very fortunate to have the multi-talented Moss Hills as Cruise Director, musician and quiz host.

Cabin Review

Our superior veranda cabin was a decent size though needs updating; the walk-in wardrobe was a boon but small items of furniture clutter the living area. Air-con barely adequate, wi-fi very slow at peak times, in-room TV messaging system occasionally failed, and the odd fitting was loose. Friendly, hard-working room attendant and butler, though we ended up with five bottles of hand lotion while sometimes missing handtowels or face cloths.

Port Reviews

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Took two city tours including a visit to the War Relics museum with its harrowing photos of the effects of chemical warfare. NB: excursions outside the city involve long journeys.

Hong Kong

Having previously visited the city, took an excursion to the New Territories; quite a long way through urban areas to see three small temples.

Manila

Great welcome and send-off from dancers and drummers at the quayside. Took a typical tour of city highlights, but beware of potential pickpockets.

Puerto Princesa

Very interesting ‘City Orientation’ with a visit to an enlightened low security penal colony where inmates performed for us and we bought artefacts that they had made themselves.

Romblon Island

Local outrigger boat dangerously overcrowded with diesel fumes permeating the cabin; it off-loaded passengers down a steep plank into 30”/75cm of water at a poor 'corally' beach with dire facilities.

Sandakan

Great short visits to adjacent sunbear and orangutan sanctuaries.
