My wife and I cruised on Iona last summer and apart from the poor service in the bars and main dining rooms due to a lack of staff we were very impressed. We found a big improvement in service this time in what turned out to be a very eventful cruise to Northern Europe. We had a fire in the Atrium on the day of boarding after a battery on a mobile scooter exploded and caught fire in a very populated area. There was a bit of panic for a few seconds before being very quickly dealt with by crew. On the tuesday morning about 5.30am the whole ship were woken up by the Captain requesting his crew attend rescue boat muster stations. A collision between two cargo ships in the middle of the North sea sadly resulted in five seamen losing their lives. Iona assisted in the search and rescue and stayed in position for nine hours at the request of the German authorities. Passengers were kept well informed by the Captain and the Iona crew played a big part in the rescue effort. Maritime law apparently states that any ship in the area at the time of an incident must assist. A very sad day but full marks to Iona and her Captain and crew. The cruise itself was very enjoyable with food mostly to a good standard. The Horizon buffet was an area we largely stayed clear of especially bearing in mind it was school holidays. The entertainment was poor especially in the main theatre where they state that you have to book but there was no check on the door when you went in so booking was not necessary after all. The Keele and Cow was an excellent venue for both breakfast and evening meal. A small extra cost but well worth it. Booked again for next year but not in school holidays.

Cabin Review

Plenty of room with good storage and larger than normal balcony

Rotterdam

Rotterdam is easily walkable from the cruise port and an interesting city to walk around. The Markethal and cube houses being a highlight
