We usually cruise Viking Cruises, but although lovely they are very pricey and are overwhelmingly aimed at the American guest population. We decided to try Ambassador as a UK, lower budget, no-fly cruise line to see what the alternative could be. We chose an inside cabin (though not the lowest category) to see what we got for our money. We had the advantage of a launch deal a year before we sailed and added on the top drinks package as well, which we don’t usually do.

First advantage was that Ambassador sails from a variety of UK ports and we chose Bristol, only 1 hour from where we live. Embarkation was exceptionally smooth and friendly - and at the end, disembarkation even more so. In fact so smooth that we got off far earlier than expected.

The cruise took in Portugal, Spain and Casablanca for some winter sun, which we certainly got, as the weather was exceptionally clement for October. We chose a booked-for excursion in each port. All had good/very good guides and were good value. We did notice that very few people tipped the tour guides, even for excellent service - perhaps this is something Ambassador could give more guidance on. The excursion to Marrakesh was pulled after the earthquake devastated it and parts of Morocco, but added back just before sailing. We decided to stay in Casablanca instead (didn’t fancy the 12 hour day and 6-7 hours on a coach) and had an excellent visit to the Hassan II Mosque - absolutely incredible building. All ports were good, but overall we rate the Portuguese sites the best for a mix of interesting and relaxing.
