Sail Date: Sep 2023

We sailed to Alaska on Oceania in 2013 and loved it. We haven't been able to book with Oceania again until this cruise and we were excited. We were especially anticipating the food because of our prior experience. Sadly, we were disappointed.

First, the good: the rooms are roomy and beautiful. The bathroom was the best (by far) I've ever had on a ship or in many hotels. We had a great cabin attendant (Gede) and butler (Raj). We loved the ports although as a fan of experiencing the ship, I'd have preferred they eliminate a couple of ports and add a couple of sea days. The itinerary was very dense.

Now for the bad: Embarkation left a bad taste in our mouths. We had a Penthouse Suite and were told we could board at noon. We showed up a little after noon and were told to sit and wait until 2. We bullied our way on but it started things off in an uncomfortable way. The food was mediocre at best. This was a HUGE disappointment. The food in the specialty restaurants was better than the main dining room or the Terrace buffet and we ended up eating in them more often than we had anticipated. The crew is working hard; too hard. They are clearly understaffed. I don't know if that's by design (profit) or a complication of the strained labor market, but the crew is stressed. Most maintained a smile; some did not. This was most evident in the Terrace buffet. It was often very difficult to get anyone to get us a drink or to remove dirty plates. The crew members seemed to be running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I think it would help if crew were assigned to particular tables instead of just bouncing around the room. The entertainment was pretty poor (although we liked Abner in Martinis) and the cruise director seemed totally absent except on his daily TV show.

Cabin Review

As stated above, our Penthouse Suite was terrific. Large and comfortable. LOTS of storage including a roomy walk-in closet. We didn't fill all the drawers. When does that happen on a ship? The bathroom was large and beautiful. 5+ stars!!
