We chose this short cruise as a taster for river cruising having spent many outstanding holidays on ocean cruises. The crew were excellent. However, the Scenic Ruby built in 2009 and updated in 2019 is at best a 4 star ship. The decor is a matter of personal taste, so cannot objectively be criticised, however our panorama suite at £1,500 per night... was a huge disappointment. No amount of included beverages or included excursions can offset a dated and impractical suite. Wardrobe doors impossible to operate without waking your partner up, slam down toilet seat, outer door off the minibar and left behind the AV wall. The AV wall outdated 10 years ago and very difficult to see. No USB charge ports at bedside. Air-con so poor that a mobile unit using ice cubes was in the suite. The per diem the Chef has to work with is also ludicrously inadequate. Only one prime cut in evidence over 4 days and that was the invitational dinner at Table La Rive - so only some 20 guests were 'treated' to a menu commensurate with the marketing claim: "the only true all-inclusive luxury river cruise line". We are comparing Scenic Ruby with Viking and Saga - and it is woefully lacking! Put the crew headed by the outstanding Cruise Director J.J. Ivanov into a contemporary ship and you would have a recipe for great success. We are provisionally booked on Scenic Amber for two weeks in October 2024 - will probably cancel and lose our deposit. Too big a risk!
