The cities that the ship stopped for were both beautiful and historic. We started our trip in Amsterdam that coincided with “Celebrating Pride Freedom”. Over 1 million visitor came to Amsterdam for Thursday August 3 - Sunday August 6. We visited the windmills in Kinderdijk Netherlands, Cologne & Koblenz Germany, Stratsbourg France, Rudeshe Germany, Spire Germany, Colmar France, Black Forest Germany, and finally arriving in Basel Switzerland on Saturday August 12. The Captain was able to find non-Viking dock during an unscheduled stoppage of all rail, road traffic, and Rhine river traffic when four WWII live bombs were unearthed in Dooseldorf Germany on Tuesday afternoon around 4PM - midnight. Captain Thoralf Rossler was able to dock in the little town of AssmennHausen Germany to allow the passengers to disembark and stretch our legs and walk along the shore of the Rhine River in thewine growing region. This decision was something that could not have been scripted and it was a fantastic demonstration of the captain and crew pulling together to make the best of an unplanned event with the WWII bombs being discovered with no timetable being known while the “Bomb Squad” working to safely defuse the 4 bombs. The captain in retrospect made all the right decisions with very little available information that directly affected all 170 passengers and 30 -40 crew members alike. We were able to catch up for lost travel time and able to visit Rudesheim on Wednesday morning via a bus coach. The other days were equally delightful. The food was amazing and the tour guides did an exceptional job to make the information and city histories interesting. When we arrived in Basel Switzerland, we did the walking tour in Basel and then we experienced the Mountain View’s of Lucerne. That was the highlight of our vacation. The itinerary for the Mountain View’s was spot on and not embellished at all.

Explorer Suite

We took one of the two Explorer Suites and it was very comfortable and we enjoyed the amenities that included breakfast brought to our suite everyday, daily laundry, and Petya, our personal Stateroom Steward, she took great care of our suite during our Viking cruise.
