We were invited to accompany some friends on this cruise and the ports sounded interesting. There were 8 of us in total. This was the first river cruise for all of us. We had all gone on many ocean cruises covering just about all cruise lines. Our first three days were rainy and windy and we were not able to enjoy the ambience of the upper deck. Beyond that Viking and the crew did their best to overcome the weather conditions. We found the crew and all those associated with Viking to be professional, friendly and courteous. By day two our servers in the dining hall and lounge pretty much knew our names and beverage preferences. We were pleasantly surprised that Viking had associates with us from the moment we landed until the gate check at the departing airport. We found the food choices to be good, though not as varies as on our ocean cruises. However everyone was able to find something to their liking at each meal. The choice of local foods at each port was a nice touch. Evenings were much more sedate than on an ocean cruise with only the on board crew providing some light entertainment. We extended our trip with 2 extra days in Budapest and booked the extension through Viking. We were booked at the New York Palace in Budapest by Viking. This is a 5 star hotel and the appointments are elegant. We found the cost of the extension to be very reasonable, Oh and this trip included free airfare and airport transfers. All in all, an enjoyable journey and we would all entertain going on another Viking river cruise

The only real con is that you can not reserve a table for dinner in the dining room. There are limited tables for parties of eight. If you desire to sit together it is necessary to wait in line until the doors to the dining room open and it is then a footrace to get one of the larger tables. This caused some minor conflicts between passingers
