Just got back from my first Alaska cruise and all I can say is, "wow!" I went with a group of 4 couples. We are all discrimiating world travellers and had a fantastic time. We were extremely pleased with both the Princess ship as well as the ports and excursions. The only thing that would have made this vacation better is more time!
GOLDEN PRINCESS Excellent service—From the moment we stepped on board, we were wowed by the terrific service. The staff really couldn't do enough for us. The first day, we asked for plenty of towels and ice and Maria, our room attendant, was efficient and always kept our supplies stocked. We met James in the Wheelhouse Bar the first day and he was quick to learn all of our names and remembered us all week. At the International Cafe, when the kids were getting to all the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies before I could get my hands on some, the chef there held a plateful for me!
Balcony rooms—We stayed on deck 11, aft, which happened to be the better side for many days' viewing. All balconies are not the same size. The lower ones are larger. Also the decks are stacked like a layered cake, so those down lower look up at the higher decks (so no privacy). The baja deck had a covered balcony but only fit two patio chairs and a table. We had adjoining rooms with our friends and were able to open the door between the balconies. However, if you want to prop it open, I suggest bringing a bungee cord. If you're debating the expense of a balcony, we all felt it paid for itself on the Glacier Bay day alone; however it was the perfect spot for many of the days to watch the shoreline, view the mountains and the sea life and the ports.
