My wife and I wanted a cruise to the Canadian Maritimes, and wanted to cruise with a line that would not disappoint, and was not a “party” boat. I cruised with Holland America about 30 plus years ago and was not disappointed. Unfortunately this time I was. Let me highlight the positive elements first.
1. The Crew - The crew on this ship was wonderful. No one could have possibly asked for anything more. They were friendly, professional, and always there to help.
2. The Ship - While the Zaandam is 23 years old, the public areas have all been renovated, and are very nice. The ship is small, only 1,400 passengers and never felt crowded. You could always find a seat where you wanted to sit.
We had an outside room on the main deck and were not satisfied with its condition. It looked like it was never renovated since the ship was built. The walls had marks on them, areas had stains on the wall that looked like some liquid ran down them at sometime, and the shower/tub was in horrible shape. Grout missing from tiles was patched with caulking, pieces of molding were patched with mismatched pieces of other molding. Black mold was growing in the grout. A Motel 6 would have offered better accommodations. The housekeeping staff kept the room and bathroom very clean, but they could not do renovations. No passenger should be given a room in that condition by Holland America or any cruise line.
