Booked an Alaska cruise without knowing much about the ship, but we absolutely loved the Quantum. Was our second Royal cruise. The first was on the Harmony, which we weren’t fond of. The Quantum is smaller, but has everything one could want on a cruise! It’s a beautiful ship and appeared well maintained. The service and food were excellent, with staff members who were kind and hard working. Loved having a balcony while sailing through parts of Alaska. Used the cabin more than expected. The food was exceptional! We thought the food on the Harmony was awful, so we were pleased that we enjoyed the food in the main dining room and the buffet. The entertainment, too, was much better than on the Harmony. Again, that was a nice surprise. The only show we weren’t fond of was Starwater. I found it to be very creative, BUT I didn’t necessarily like it. The scene performances went on way too long.
Had a balcony cabin, which was spacious and nicely decorated. Plenty of room and storage.
Icy Strait Point was a replacement for Skagway. We took the gondola to the top
of Sky Peak, which was a scary ride, and pointless when we reached the top. There’s nothing there but a shop or two and the weather was foggy and drizzly.
So there were no sights to be seen.
We liked Sitka a lot. Took a zodiac boat ride around the waters along with a marine biologist. Had lunch at Fin Lodge, which was a nice stop. The lunch food was so-so. Enjoyed the ships at the pier, which employed very friendly and helpful people.
Juneau is a beautiful town and was finally a stop on our itinerary where we saw beautiful snow-capped mountains. Took a whale-watching tour, which was nicely done, but at 4 hours was way too long in our opinion. Loved the shopping close by the pier.
This was a simply stunning detour to the glacier!
Arrived in Seattle 2 days early since we had never been there. Our hotel was a block from Pike Place Market. Everything downtown thrives on the market. When it closes, the downtown seemed to close too. We did a tour around the city, which we enjoyed. But we did not enjoy the high presence of homeless. Some seemed very aggressive. On the bus from the port to the airport after our cruise, I was struck by the considerable amount of trash along the road. I understand trash can happen, but this was a lot and for several miles. Seattle isn’t somewhere I’d visit again.
