I had only sailed on Celebrity once before, on the Silhouette on a very brief Bahamas cruise from Fort Lauderdale. Despite the brief duration, the cruise was enjoyable and the ship and its service was top-notch. This cruise on the Edge from Barcelona was for 7-nights, and my traveling companion talked me into splurging for The Retreat. The price was a bit high, more than I'd usually spend on a cruise, and I did initially have buyer's remorse, but those concerns went out the window once the journey began.

I flew into Barcelona the day before the ship sailed, and I enjoyed experiencing some of the city. For those of you going to Barcelona, the Sofitel Barcelona Skipper is an excellent hotel! Making it from the hotel to the port was easy and took no more than 15 minutes in a taxi. Check-in was mostly handled online prior to arriving at the port. Once at the port, a Celebrity rep quickly verified that we had completed all the check-in requirements, and we were headed on board in no more than a few minutes.

The Edge is a beautiful ship, very modern, and spacious. I equate Celebrity ships to sailing inside a W Hotel. There are spaces throughout the ship that serve no functional purpose other than to look good. I heard some people comment that they thought this was a waste, i.e. "they could have put a bar or a shop in this space", but this aesthetic is very much Celebrity and for their regular customers, they love it. Admittedly, I liked it too.

Cabin Review

Sky Suite

Sunset Sky Suite (aft, large cabin with large balcony), which was very comfortable for two people, plenty of storage and elbow room, a king bed (mattress a wee-bit firm), and a large bathroom with a garden tub. Our butler and cabin steward were outstanding. The cabin was spotlessly clean all week, and all requests were handled promptly. Our cabin was stocked all week with bottled water and sodas at our request, which were included as part of The Retreat. One sore point, which the butler made us aware of, was the tendency for soot to accumulate on the balcony. The furniture is all white, or off-white, and if the soot gets on your clothes, you'll be lucky if it washes out. The soot was very noticeable.

Port Reviews

Barcelona

A beautiful city on the water. Countless opportunities for dining, drinking, and touring. Beware of pickpockets, however. They are everywhere.
