A Viking River Cruise has been a bucket list vacation for quite sometime. My husband and I wanted to share the experience with my mother and niece so we got a regular stateroom for them and a suite for us so we could have a place to gather the 4 of us. The whole experience was exceptional! The staterooms perfectly appointed (Champagne upon arrival, no less!), fresh fruit daily, beverages restocked daily, bed turn down in the evening was luxurious - I cannot stress enough the feeling of being pampered at every turn. The food was outstanding, every meal had something new (if you wanted it - otherwise, scrumptious 'everyday standards' equally good (Salade Nicoise was a favorite!)). And the staff - attentive, friendly, welcoming - their only job was to make you feel like royalty. The Gersemi's staff for our trip was A++++++, from housekeeping to wait staff to cruise director to ship's Captain. Everyone was there to make the trip comfortable, enjoyable, memorable and safe. Off-ship excursions did not disappoint. We took advantage of most of the included excursions plus added a few extras such as the Beer Experience in Cologne and Rudesheim Dinner. The weather was hot during our trip (38-40 C) and the Cologne tour guide was able to adjust 'on the fly' to find locations that were outside instead of indoors, un-air-conditioned. Much appreciated! Another plus: two of our wait staff had the evening off and accompanied us that evening. It was so good to get to know them better personally and made our further interactions more special. They weren't just 'the help' any longer but new friends.

Everything was perfect except maybe the glitch with the A/C one night. But even that was attended to in no time at all. This was a vacation to top all others! I'm hoping that this will not be my only Viking Cruise (I bought two vouchers, so it better not be!).

Cabin Review

Veranda Suite

Luxurious! It's one of the nicest 'hotel rooms' I've ever been in. Each room had access to full length opening doors to the outside. The seating area has a walk-out veranda with two chairs and table. We sat out there on more than one evening, re-living the day. Nice size shower! Fresh flowers. Plenty of closet space. Comfortable bed. Refreshed towels daily if you wanted. Just luxury in every detail. Loved the Viking Daily delivered each night at bed turn down listing the next day's activities (and when you need to be ready! ). Attention to every detail.

Port Reviews

We've been to Amsterdam before so it was like visiting an old friend. My mother had not been there so it was a new experience for her. Public transportation is easy to navigate and many 'sites' are within walking distance of docking area. We visited the van Gogh museum. It did not disappoint.

Such a delightful town! We went unguided to the church on the hill and had lunch on the patio on the City Square. Also, convenient access to cash machine! Guided Black Forest excursion was in the afternoon. Great trip by motor coach through the Black Forest countryside to demonstration of cuckoo clocks and Black Forest Cake. Also for those sure of foot, a little hike in the woods. Nice!

We took part in the included shore excursion and then stayed in town for lunch and a search for the real 'perfume of Cologne' (which we did find). We returned that evening for our Beer Dinner. Our guide was SO NICE! So friendly and open. We felt like we were long separated friends. It was a very fun evening, sampling Kolsch from different pubs. Connected with other cruisers with similar tastes (beer!)

Great walking tour and guide. When we exhibited interest in the ruined Jewish quarter, she volunteered (at the end of the regular tour) to take us there and facilitated getting a little discount on the entrance fee (there was a small group of us) and accompanied us, explaining as she went. What service! Just another example of the stellar quality and kindness of staff, whether full-time employees or part-time tour guides.

Hot day at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (38-40 C)! But our guide soldiered through it, explaining the Fortress' history as though Napoleon III's troops had just left. A nice historical outing and ride down from the Fortress over the Rhine to Koblenz. Wish we had had more time to explore the Deutsche Ecke (German Corner).

Oh, what a lovely town! Medieval all over it! We took advantage of the included excursion and then stayed in town for lunch and then beers at the Academie du Biere! Lots of wandering about town - we bought meat and cheese for our road trip after our upcoming disembarkation in Basel. Lots of good shopping.
