This cruise was selected due to the Viking reputation and the free air fare promotion from Viking. We added the Lake Como pre cruise extension and the Amsterdam post cruise extension. The total for the trip was 14 days counting the overnight flight. Lake Como was incredible. It is beautiful and the food is great. On board the Viking Sigrun, everything ran smoothly. Our cabin was clean and the space is very well planned. We had a French Balcony cabin and enjoyed the views out the floor to ceiling windows. Food on the ship was good. Not the best I've ever had, but it was good. The breakfast buffet has a lot of choices. Lunch and dinner each had quite a few choices as well. We typically ordered the chef suggested menu, but the always available items were a good fall back if needed. The dining room staff was incredible. There was a good variety of shore excursions. We enjoyed those. Sometimes we tried to do too many. I would caution against that. One morning we were tired and skipped the excursion and spent time on the ship relaxing. See all you can, but don't be afraid to take a break. We did the Dine in Rudsheim excursion and really enjoyed it. Marksburg Castle was very interesting, but notice the activity level is demanding. This is accurate. It is quite a climb up the hill to the castle, but worth it. Having local tour guides is nice so you really get good information about each port. There was a Viking host at every point. You could always get information and recommendations. Viking handled everything for us. Once we picked up our luggage at the arrival airport we barely had to handle it again. We traveled with 4 other couples. I think the best review I can give is that we are all trying to decide when and where our next Viking cruise will take us.
We had a French Balcony which I recommend. The glass doors open if you like that and you can lean out a bit. There are cabins with balconies. The balconies are small. For me the extra cost for the balcony is not worth it. We had plenty of space for our clothes. Our luggage fit under the bed and we had one suitcase that was large. I am 5'10" and fit in the shower fine. If you are much over 6 feet tall you may feel cramped in the bathroom.
We did an extension in Amsterdam. We did the included tour, a food tour, and the evening canal cruise. Evening canal cruise was the most enjoyable. The guide on the food tour was excellent. The actual food on the tour, not so much. On our own we toured the Rembrandt House museum and the Anne Frank house. Both were excellent. Public transportation is very accommodating in Amsterdam.
Loved the Black Forest excursion. Beautiful countryside. Breisach itself is nothing extra.
The cathedral is impressive. Cologne is a large city. There had been a parade the day before and there was broken glass everywhere. Great place to find a bar and have a kolsch beer. We went to Peters.
We took the barge excursion. Great information from the miller and got to go inside and see how the miller and his family live. Bought a tshirt in the gift shop. Remember to size up. European XL = US Large.
The review is more about Rudesheim. We did the Dine in Rudesheim excursion. Everyone in our group enjoyed this. There was music and dancing and good food. We wanted to visit the Cathe Wahlfarht Christmas store in Rudesheim so we left the ship as soon as we could and walked (about 15 minutes) to the store which was just around the corner from the dinner spot. We rode the mini-train back to the ship after dinner. The customer service desk on the ship helped us figure out how to do this. We docked a bit after 5:00 and the store closed at 6:00. Appreciate the helpful staff on the ship.
The cathedral is beautiful. People were singing when we were there. Their voices filled the huge space. It was wonderful. Starsbourg is a beautiful city. I wish we had more time there. We took the leisurely tour which I felt was very good. Not sure what we missed by not taking the full included excursion, but did not feel cheated by taking the leisurely option.
