We have always heard amazing things about Viking River Cruises. We chose this one because we wanted to visit the beaches of Normandy. As for the cruise itself, Viking is wonderful. The public areas are comfortable and inviting. We often chose to go to the upper deck and just enjoy the breeze as we cruised along the river. There was plenty of room and it never felt crowded. The service was top notch, they accommodate any need or request. The food overall was excellent. House wines are included with meals and are very good. We enjoyed the presentations on places we would be visiting and learning more of the history, wish there were a little more.

The guides on the excursions were wonderful, very knowledgeable and entertaining. One of the excursions we paid extra for was bicycle tour. Unfortunately, I am short and they did not have a bicycle with a seat low enough for me to ride comfortably and the bike malfunctioned near the end of the trip, resulting in having to walk my bike the remainder of the way. One of the stops listed in the description, a stop at a covered bridge for a special snack was randomly deleted without explanation. We were simply handed snacks when we arrived back at the dock.(the snacks were still delicious even without a covered bridge).

The Normandy beach excursion included several hours at a WWII museum which was interesting but seemed unnecessary. The time at the US cemetery was very nice and Viking provided a special service to honor veterans and the fallen servicemen. We had ample time at the cemetery and it was a very meaningful experience. Unfortunately, the tour only allowed 30 minutes on Omaha beach and placed us at a very crowded beach spot with sunbathers and families all along the beach. I know there are other areas of Omaha Beach we could have stopped at that were not swarming with beachgoers. We were nowhere near Pointe du Hoc which we had assumed we would see but it was not visible from the portion of the beach we stopped at. There were 2 monuments on the beach and it was nice to see those.

Cabin Review

Our cabin was on the lower level and we chose that because we don't spend a lot of time in our cabin. The bed was comfortable which is most important. There was plenty of room in the closet and drawers to unpack all of our clothes. Housekeeping was excellent. We had a mini fridge and a large bottle of fresh water was placed in our room daily. Every possible need was anticipated. The bathroom was compact but plenty of room for our toiletries. Lighting was excellent in the cabin and the bathroom.
