This was my third Island Windjammer Cruise, and the second on Vela. This year was the usual itinerary that leaves from Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia, and goes to Martinique before returning to Saint Lucia. My wife and I were on the same ship last year, but had to do a southern itinerary as France did not allow cruise ships to dock in 2022 due to Covid.
My favorite part of this Sailing Cruise is the casual atmosphere where you can choose to be active or not. Each day has the option of a hike or island tour along with the chance to snorkel or possibly swim and rope swing from the boat.
Our cruise included a beach day at Anse Chastanet near the famous Pitons before heading to Martinique. We visited Les Anses-d’Arlet, St. Pierre and St. Anne and we found a French bakery in each port. As Martinique is considered French territory, you can find a baguette with butter or any other type of French pastry easily. Just be sure to bring your credit card or euros as they do not accept the US dollar or EC dollar.
Cabins are small due to Vela being a sailing ship, but it was cozy and clean.
