My husband and I sailed on a Viking Ocean Cruise and loved it so much that we decided to try a Viking Riverboat Cruise. Our experience on the Mediterranean Odyssey was 5-Star. The Grand European riverboat, however, had some flaws and we can only give it 4 stars.
Pro's for the Riverboat experience: FOOD!, Cabin with balcony, Included excursion guides were the best, disembarkation, Cruise Director (Petra),
Con's: Cabin location in rear of boat, 67 locks was about 50 too many, 2 excursions we paid for changed and were not worth the price we paid, poor bar service, lack of tables for 2 for all meals, the only historian we listened to was poor, read his paper and was hard to understand (not up to Viking Ocean standards), no time for excursions in the departure city (had we not extended, we would not have experienced Amsterdam), our flights (we will be more specific in the future), the closure of the top deck for 5 days.
We love the cabins and stateroom service. Love the heated bathroom floor. Beds are super comfortable. We enjoy the balcony (when there is no other boat tied up to us as that took away our view and breeze). Did not enjoy the location of our room. We were the last room at the rear of the boat and it was very noisy. When we went through locks or when docking, it sounded and felt like a train was coming through our room. This sometimes happened in the middle of the night. (We went through 67 locks in 15 days. That number was never disclosed to us.) Our stateroom attendant was wonderful.
