I had been looking at the Viking Cruise - Grand European Tour for several years and compared this cruise with the larger Pacific Ocean cruises to Alaska. I found the Pacific Ocean cruises to be much more expensive and with a larger number of passengers; somewhat worrisome since COVID-19. Last year several friends took the Grand European Tour cruise and raved about their experience. They posted almost daily on Facebook about their adventure showing pictures of medieval castles, palaces, towns with ample samplings of beer, sausage, wine and other wonderful things to see, eat, and experience. The friends also noted the onboard experience of fine food, drinks, comradery, new friends, and wonderful crew members. The support of Viking personnel not only on board the Modi but throughout the cruise (arrival through departure home) exceeded our expectations. Since our arrival home, my entire family has been bemoaning the ending of gourmet quality dishes, cookies, desserts, and drinks. Also, the on-board entertainment and special activities made the cruise not only educational but also memorable.
The cabin and bathroom facilities were good to excellent.
1 - It was always interesting to watch the water go bye at nose level.
2 - The rooms were very, very quiet; I rarely heard any news from an adjacent cabin or from the hallway.
3 - The bathroom was excellent and very functional in design; I especially enjoyed the heated flooring.
4 - The dimmer light didn't seem to work as well as needed.
5 - My son's TV failed to work twice during the voyage.
6 - Several of my family found the beds themselves to be lumpy to the point of causing sleeping issues.
7 - I can never understand how Europeans can sleep under a heavy comforter in the summer time. Fortunately, we were provided with light sheets.
