I will keep this short to highlight the positive because frankly there were very few issues of concern to talk about. The Getaway is an older ship that really did not show her age and you really had to look hard to find signs of wear anywhere. The ship is very well maintained and clean in all areas. Food quality, choices and presentation to include excellant service was the best we have ever had on this class of ships. Sailed many times on RC and other lines over the years but first time on NCL. We were very impressed with dining room service, bar service and many alternative dining options we experienced. Entertainment was abundant with something for everyone on every night of our 7 night cruise. Drink packages on this line are reasonable and we found bar service (16 bars throughout the ship) was excellent with little wait. Pools are smaller on this ship but we found the family pool and kids splash zone well planned out and secluded from the mass pool . Port stops were your typical eastern Caribbean flare, Private island, St Thomas, San Juan, and Amber Cove. NCL's private island stop was just the right size for navigation, beaches were beautiful and food and bar service there was also very good. We only chose one excursion at the Amber Cove , Dominican Republic stop and that was Ocean Beach Escape to a private beach resort. Warning this excursion was not what we expected and not a luxury resort by any means. Food there was not good and service was lacking. Warning the beach on this excursion is a public beach, so every 5 minutes you were hounded by island vendors selling everything from massages ($50 for a foot massage) , to jewelry, clogs, hats, crafts and other. Some of these walking vendors were very aggressive. Beach loung chairs were in dire need of repair and there are only two or 3 umbrellas for shade. Not recommended excursion for the price of $99 per person.

Overall this was a great experience as 1st time guest on NCL. We are loyal to RC, but would choose NCL again if the itinerary offered was what we were looking for. We were deck 11, forward balcony room very close to elevators. Cabin was kept spotless. Very small and tight balcony. We traveled with family and two small children .Overall great experience on The Getaway.

Cabin Review

Mid-Ship Balcony Stateroom

Two thumbs up, but beware balcony is very small.

Port Reviews

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata)

The Amber Cove port with shops, dining and pool is well organized and beautiful. Our excursion away from Amber cove port was not what we expected.
