I’d never been to Germany and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my previous 3 cruises with Viking, so the Rhine Getaway was a natural. It was our first aboard one of their long ships. Our expectations were high, given our previous experience with them, and they still exceeded them at every opportunity.
The shore excursions were accurately described and well selected. My spouse uses a rollator, and we found the ‘easy-walking’ group to be perfect. The cobblestones, on the other hand, were a pain - but we were expecting that and managed pretty well. There were a couple of ports where the dockage proved a little challenging, but the staff were quick to lend a hand to help us over the rough spots. They were all very kind and eager to make our experience a pleasant one, throughout the cruise.
Everything is so interesting that it is tempting to over-book your time in port. We skipped a couple of excursions, just to relax and enjoy the beautiful common areas aboard the Kara. We’ll happily take another Viking river cruise!
We chose a veranda cabin, and although we didn’t spend a lot of time on the balcony we were pleased with our decision. Though smaller than a comparable cabin class on an ocean liner, it was very well laid out and never felt cramped. Our cabin steward was friendly and very responsive - the place was consistently spotless!
