We chose this cruise because we wanted to experience the various boating adventures and to see the beauty surrounding the Great Lakes as well as seeing Niagara Falls up close. This cruise was more adventurous as it afforded us the opportunity to hike and boat on various vessels. The crew was attuned to our needs and made certain that we were all trained in matters of safety. The ship was kept clean at all times, in fact, members of the crew were seen cleaning all public areas. Food was delicious, well prepared, with lots of variety. It was attractively presented. In addition the head chef made himself available during our meals. Service was impeccable. We were informed daily of the next day’s offerings on excursions. What to expect, where to meet, and how to remain safe. Excursion ships are very different from ocean ships and the officers and crew were intent on helping the guests understand and get the most out of their experience.
Our cabin was comfortable and well appointed. It was roomier than other cruise lines cabins. There was plenty of storage space and closets, with drawers in the main room as well as the bathroom. It was cleaned daily with attention to detail. Our room stewards were friendly and accommodated all of our requests- magnifying makeup mirror, distilled water, and a top sheet.
The carriage ride was informative and the driver was very entertaining. We had lunch at the Seabiscuit Cafe. Food was outstanding and service was friendly and fabulous. We stopped for fudge at Joanne’s. Delicious!
We did the marsh walking tour. The guide was knowledgeable and well informed about the area. The trip aboard the Zodiac was loads of fun. There was a guide from Viking to help us off the Zodiac and back on when it was time to leave. Beautiful area with lots of birds.
Alpena was lovely and the guide was knowledgeable and informative. The only reason I couldn’t give it 5 stars is due to the difficulty and treacherous beach walk over rocks. Although, I am an experienced hiker, I found it almost unnavigable and fell along with other hikers. Perhaps walking sticks or poles would be helpful or at least increase the difficulty level so people are well aware. I still enjoyed it, loved the campfire with s’mores when we concluded our hike.
