This was a family trip. My wife and I joined my brother and his wife, and a nephew and his bride on this trip. They had originally booked the trip for May 2020, which obviously didn't happen. We decide to join them when they decided to rebook it for May 2022. Then we mutually agreed to wait another year, so this year (2023) we finally went.
The trip started with a 3-day pre-cruise excursion in Amsterdam. We had a great time, and the Viking included "Introduction" walking tour was much better than I expected. I thought they would just show us the tourist places, then let us loose, but our tour guide (Pamela) was born and raised in Amsterdam (not far from the Anne Frank house), and she did a terrific job of showing off her city.
We took the all-day “Golden Age” excursion on embarkation day. This consisted of a guided tour of the Rijksmuseum, an hour-long canal cruise, lunch, and then a visit to a home from the 1700’s. It was rather pricey, but we took it because it checked off several items on our list, and we felt confident that as a Viking tour, they would take care of our luggage and get us to the boat on time.
A bit smaller than I expected from pictures, but plenty big in practice. Plenty of storage, and several 110-volt outlets. Having a private balcony was great, especially during early mornings. The room attendant was terrific. She even rolled up my charging cables I left dangling by the bedside!
Amsterdam is a great city to visit, and is extremely walkable. Do yourself a favor, though, and don't follow the crowds that walk from Centraal Station to the Dam Square. Take side streets to avoid the less congested, touristy areas.
