With the “Quantum of the seas” fresh in my mind from a couple of weeks earlier, and being seriously disappointed with the comfort of the room and quality of the food on the Quantum, I decided, against my better judgement, to jump at a reasonable price for a ‘Single Balcony Stateroom’ for the two-week crossing on the Odyssey – transatlantic FORT LAUDERDALE to Rome.
My general thinking was that the Odyssey is years younger than the Quantum, so there must be so many improvements.

Single Balcony Room
Compared to a standard balcony, the single room was missing the sofa area and a desk, but had a huge balcony complete with 2 sun lounges, which was possibly over generous for a single occupancy room.
Other than the lack of a sofa area, the room was identical to the standard Balcony stateroom on the Quantum. Complete with the same furnishing, decoration, door handles and lamps etc, all feeling like the design queues had been taken from a Delta Airlines Airport Lounge circa 1985. All in all, very disappointing. I find the room styling on Quantum class ships dull, dated and a bit depressing, while being frustratingly easy to improve on.
The bed was hard and uncomfortable, the pillows were overstuffed polyester things. Oddly the bedding was generally thread-bare, with small rips in the sheets.
I did however, like the size of this room for one person, it was cosey. And the balcony was great. – Well eventually…
(On the first day at sea, I opened the balcony door to discover my room was above a smoking area, directly above it. Nasty. And no mention of this on the website when booking. Which is a little cheap of RCI.
Unfortunately, there was an individual smoking cannabis, the smell of which filled my room. He was also coughing and spitting all-over the deck. Real glamour! I took photos and reported to Guest services – I was moved to another single room on the other side of the ship immediately. But security staff appeared to be more interested in ensuring I deleted photos of the evidence, than doing anything about the use of illegal drugs on the ship. – Not the best impression.)
