We've been on quite a few NCL cruises and have enjoyed them all. While this one had some plusses, we enjoyed this far less than any previous cruise (on any line). Below are the pros and cons.
-------------------------------------
Good things:
Good size, nice decor. We will not book an aft cabin again though on a large ship like this. Much better to be in the mid or forward (which we usually are).
Glacier Bay is amazing, but read the comments about about the Observation Deck issues. We enjoyed room service in our balcony room and it was a great day (with great weather).
we reserved a two part excursion through NCL. In the morning, the Mendenhall Glacier for a short time (we had about 45 minutes to wander), and then after that, whale watching. The guides were all fine, but the boat for the whale watching was not up to quality for the price we paid. It was raining lightly which they can't control obviously, but the windows were very fogged by a third of the way through the tour, and due to the weather, the outside deck wasn't really an option. We saw one or two whales, but unfortunately from quite a distance and only small parts of the whales (not the tour company's fault). They really ought to treat the windows with anti-fog substances, or hand out towels to wipe them.
For some reason, NCL thought it was a good idea to use their own port to dock the ship. Unfortunately, that dock is a 15-20 minute drive from town and they had very limited buses (we were using yellow school buses to get there and back), so we had a 30 minute line to get on a bus. That meant from the first available time to getting to town was at least 45 minutes to an hour. They even dropped us off by bus at an empty port right right in town and we got to walk past other cruise ships whose passengers were able to walk off the ship and right into town. It really was irritating. Thanks NCL...
My wife and adult daughter took the morning Ghosts and Good Times tour and they really enjoyed it a lot. A few hours later we all took the White Pass Scenic railway tour. Not a good experience at all. My wife and I lined up and waited in line in the rain, very strong winds and 40 degree temperature for 45 minutes. People were literally soaked. All passengers had to be bussed from the ship to the terminal which was a short ride, but the frustrating thing was that people who were later than us got to sit in the bus for 20 minutes or so nice and warm while we looked at them while we stood in the freezing rain. Not too big of an issue except they got out and in to the train first! We got there early to get a good seat along with most of the people, but whole busloads went right in front of all of us. The train itself was a mixed bag. The ride would be nice in the summer, but in the winter, they have one heater in each cabin and it's not enough so people were very cold. Also, the windows were even worse as far as fogging than the whale watching. Someone on the tour was a chemist and she suggested we put hand sanitizer on the windows and rub it in to keep it a little clearer, so everyone did that, but it was still very hard to see.
Victoria British Columbia looks like it might be a beautiful city. Unfortunately we arrived at dark and were there about 3 hours total (ship was late getting access). We ended up just doing their planetarium visit because by 9pm it was dark and cold. It was operated by some amazing young adults - smart and interesting to listen to - so we enjoyed it even though it's a very small operation.
