We cruised from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam. This was our first river cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Pick up at the Zurich airport for transfer to Basel was really easy - we found our driver very quickly by following the directions that they gave us. All the tours were interesting and well-planned. The food spoiled us - there were multiple choices for every meal, the presentation was excellent and everything we had was very good. Breakfast in the dining room was a full-range feast including made-to-order omelettes. There were also early and late light breakfast options. Lunch included a buffet with a pasta dish, multiple salads, soup, breads, and desserts, plus menu options and a daily sandwich choice. Dinner had 3 different choices every night, including a vegetarian choice, plus sirloin steak or grilled chicken if you didn't want the daily menu choices.
Our cabin was small but very well laid out and the bed was super comfortable. We had the picture window that drops down half-way to make sort of a balcony, but didn't really use it because it was April and too cold. We didn't spend much free time in the cabin anyway because it was so pleasant to be in the lounge or outside on the sun deck. We had planned to take advantage of the e-bikes that you can check out when the ship is docked, but we were too busy to get a chance! Each stop has planned activities that are included in the fees (with a couple extra $ options, one of which we did). You can participate in the tours, stay on board, or go off on your own.
One morning was spent cruising through the beautiful Rhine gorge, with commentary from the cruise director. There are a lot of nice touches that we hadn't expected, like blankets available on deck so you can sit out and enjoy the views even when it's chilly, or the audio devices that you wear on the tours so you can hear the tour guide even if you're at the back of the group. There was usually time on your own to explore after the guided tours. The favorite for us was the trip to the Keukenhof Gardens to see the tulips. It was an early start that morning but well worth it because by the time we were leaving it was getting very crowded, with more people streaming in. Everything on the cruise had a lot of thought put into it, but what really stood out for us on this cruise was the staff and crew. They were unfailingly helpful, smiling, and attentive, and really made the cruise fun.
