We selected this cruise as we were familiar with the Azamara line, having sailed with them previously. We prefer ships with fewer than 1,000 passengers, port-intensive itineraries, and the carefree nature of all-inclusive voyages. This was our 42nd cruise in all, and our fourth with Azamara. Having visited most of Asia on prior land and cruise vacations, The "Land of the Rising Sun" had alluded us until this voyage, so we wanted a full itinerary of Japan. This option literally checked all of the boxes for us.

The itinerary lived up to its name of "intensive." The 15-night voyage only included one sea-day at the front end. If you need more down time, you will need to create your own space by either staying on ship on port days or taking shorter shore excursions from time to time. We found Japan fascinating and enjoyed the rigorous touring schedule, despite the occasional fatigue.

The good news is that you have the service-oriented and immensely comfortable Azamara Quest to return home to each evening. Despite the aging fleet and the much-talked about small staterooms--and even smaller cabin showers--the Azamara fleet is still a welcoming oasis. The ships are big enough to have the main bells and whistles, yet small enough to make navigating them a breeze while on board, as well as when embarking and disembarking. There was never a line! The replacement of the Azamara Quest's casino with the cavernous lounge/bar known as "The Den" is a welcome addition, offering passengers even greater space aboard this otherwise intimate ship. The Quest is well-appointed and actually looks like a classic ocean liner in terms of design and decor. The service was exemplary, accommodating, and friendly, with the crew consistently demonstrating a "can-do" attitude without a hint of pretension.

Cabin Review

Club Veranda Stateroom

Azamara's cabins and showers are small compared to today's standards. That said, our stateroom was well-appointed, quiet, clean, functional, and comfortable. The bedding was particularly comfortable, a welcome perk on this port-intensive cruise. Amenities included an in-cabin refrigerator, which was stocked with our desired beverages, a safe, flat-screen television, seating, a desk/vanity, and ample closet and drawer space. The cabin accommodations were fine. If you prefer something larger, book a suite.
