Sail Date: Mar 2023

Having multiple Cunard transatlantic crossings under the belt, we were looking at trying something a little different and were pleasantly surprised with our Viking Star crossing and a small ship experience on our Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona sailing. I now see why Viking consistently earns high marks from it's customers - they put customer service at the forefront and it shows.

We embarked in Fort Lauderdale following an early morning flight. Viking reps were waiting at baggage claim and the transfer went smooth. Check in at the pier was a breeze even with the technical difficulties they were experience (systems down). We were on board within a half hour (most of that due to the system issues which I hear were later resolved) and had our first of many meals in the World Cafe. The selection was good; not overwhelming with choices but what they lacked in quantity they more than made up in quality and taste. Honest this was some of the best food we've had on a ship in a long, long time. In addition to the World Cafe, food stations can be found in many other places around the ship and of course the main dining room. We visited one of the two alternative restaurants (Manfredi's) which was a bit of a disappointment both on the service and food side. Didn't try the Chef's Table as it's not type of food. Of course with Viking's pricing strategy, there's no up charge for the specialty restaurants or really for much of anything.

Our stateroom was nicely appointed. Plenty of room, adequate balcony (which we used every day), very comfortable bed, couple of chairs with a smallish table, a refrigerator that they restocked with sodas and a few snacks daily and one of the nicest bathrooms for a cabin of this size. The shower was amazing. Room has plenty of outlets both USA plugs and European (two round prongs). UBS ports on both sides of the bed. Only downsize was a lack of drawer space in the room.

Cabin Review

My new favorite stateroom. Well equipped. Comfortable bed, Best cabin shower ever.

Port Reviews

Madeira (Funchal)

How in the world did they build all those roads is beyond me. Seen a lot of islands but this one is one of the more interesting and beautiful ones and would love to spend more time there (though leave the driving to the locals).
