We’ve had four successful cruises with Oceania, including the Amazon, so continuing around South America with them seemed obvious. A sad mistake.
Our experience has been that it was very poorly planned by the itinerary team from the outset, we suffered three failed port visits for a mix of weather and ‘safety concerns’ (one, the Falklands, not unusual, but three!). The low point was a port visit, Laguna San Rafael, that was actually a day at anchor with the most basic of scenery and grossly overpriced boat trip to a glacier, the brochure showed photos of the glacier as being the port. Clearly misleading as less than 300 could go on the excursions. We visited San Antonio (Santiago), but Valparaiso would have been better and now reopened to cruises). Worst of all, finishing in Calleo, Lima, a port area so unsafe we couldn’t even be dropped at the gate on disembarkation (we had arrived a day early having cancelled Pisco (didn’t tell us until we were told by other passengers) and so wanted to disembark but there was total confusion amongst the staff and, of course, no Officer to be seen to help a totally inexperienced front desk team. We were misinformed that the
On board programme of events was not to our liking, so having 11 sea days rather than 7 was a big disappointment. My wife was only saved by the Art Loft programme and artist.
One of few highlights, our Butler and stateroom team were brilliant, certainly went the extra mile especially in helping us celebrate a milestone anniversary.
Lima itself was well worth visiting, we organised a guide and driver for a couple of days and staying in Miralores on disembarking.
The port though is totally ill-equipped with no facilities and in a very unsafe area of Lima, meaning the cruise company bused us to La Perla, but could advise where the drop off/pick up point would be for drivers or private tours.
