Cabin: Penthouse Suite

For its final winter in the Caribbean, some cabins on the 1200 passenger Oceania Riviera have had a facelift. We just completed 19 days on Riviera visiting eastern and western Caribbean ports, and some of the changes stand out.

The ports may not be what you recall. At San Juan, Puerto Rico the Riviera tied up at a great location, a short walk from the historic tourist area. Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic and Santo Tomas in Guatemala, on the other hand, were nowhere. In many ports, guests taking excursions complained of long bus rides. Other “ports” such as “Great Stirrup Cay” turned out to be fillers, little Disneyland islands owned by the shipping line, offering nothing of natural or historical interest.

Boarding at Miami was streamlined and orderly. But Oceania pretends it can discharge passengers at the end of the cruise in just an hour. It can’t. Passengers must leave their staterooms by 8 AM, to be called up in four groups to stand in a long line waiting to pass through two checkers to a single gangplank. The halt, the lame and the elderly alike, with their overnight bags, inched along.

Cabin Review

Penthouse Suite

Beautifully redone stateroom with a good table for dining in the stateroom, and the best bathroom.
