Awesome Scenery, Average cruise- Exceptional Staff response

Embarcation was a smooth and eventless system. Rooms were ready at 1:30PM as promised. Lunch onboard was okay. The dinig area was severely overcrowded. They were definitely not set up for the numbers that were coming through.

At 1:30 we headed to our stateroom. The space and set up was as expected. Teh bathroom was a shower only facility but maybe a little roomier than a few other lines. The sink had chips and cigarette burns, but was clean, the carpet looked worn, but was clean. There was a stronge sewage smell in the bathroom most of the trip, but did not permeate the rest of the cabin. the pubic bathrooms had nice freshner scents so no smell in them. The beds were some of the most comfortable beds we ahve ever had on a cruise.

The entertainment was really nice. We saw the first show and were very impressed with all the singers and the performers. the cruise director has a great voice, too bad she did not participate in the crew talent show. The lecturer was also More good. The staff top to bottm were some of the friendliest I have ever encountered.

The breakfast buffet and the dining room were often 5 to 10 minutes behind schedule. In the breakfast and lunch lines the servers often said yes to whatever you asked, wheather they understood or not. Thus they often did not get you what you were asking for. Nor did they always understand how you were ordering eggs or meat. Small but aggrivating issue. The food was average to good. We really could not call anything spectacular. We did however miss the choclate buffet, so maybe that would have been spectacular. If it was, we never heard about it. We did not visit the specialty restaurnt. We did hear it was spectacular.

Service was good most of the time, but we did have issues. One time we had to call to get an extra towel because our steward apparently did not understand my request that morning. we called 3 times and waited 2 hours for the towel. This sent me over the edge with several other small issues. Since we had spoken at lentgth with the Hotel manager in our cruise critic social, he told us to contact him if we should have any issues pr need any assitance so we did. The next day the manager under him , over our steward came to our cabin personally to see what could be done. We told him of all the small things that were really beginning to pile up and he profusely appologized. he told us that our Steward was one of about half of the stewards that had no beeper or means of being contacted so our steward did not get messages and we did not get servioce because of it. I explained that i understood that woudl be an issue but that I felt that was an issue that Celebrity should fix. It was definitely not indicative of an "upscale" cruise line. They asked about the lateness of the Breakfast and the dindig room and then dicussed that their clocks often did not keep good time. I also understood but again told them that was a Celebrity issue and not indicative of "upscale" and if they planned to open 10 min early then they should be open at least on time if clocks were an issue. The Hotel manager also asked about the communication issues, and then suggested that maybe his staff did not fully understand. I agreed but again reminded them that if they claimed to understand and could serve the English speakers, then they should understand. If that was not the case then it was the cruise line that should make sure they were completely trained or at least knew how to ask if they did not understand. They also had an adult only pool that constantly had kids in it. and though staff were around, no one was enforcing the rules. As a result of our rather detailed discussion they asked what they could do to make up for all the inconvenience. I told them just to have the restaurants opened on time, and service available when we needed it. They promised to work on the issues immediately and wanted to send a bottle of wine. we told then that would be great but was in no way necessary, plus we tended to drink the sweet wines only, and they were not so popular on this ship. they insisted and asked specifically what we liked. We told them. Then they sent a bottle of dry white the next day. When we received it we called and thanked them but told them they really should not have and that we truly did not drink dry wine, so they should really keep it and sell it. Instead they sent the bottle to the guests we were traveling with and had us a bottle of Riesling waiting at our dinner table that night. Then the next day we came in to the room and had two bath robes, fancy pens and travel cases waiting on us. in response to our issues, we never had another late breakfast or dinner, and we had no further issues with any service in our cabin. They even had the pool personnel telling the parents that their kids were welcome in the main pool but that the adult pool was not for children. I have never had such amazing and immediate response. That was definitely "upscale." Big disappointment-NO Towel art except by the pool! So sad. Less

Cabin review: Bal7068

The cabin was dated. bathroom was clean but sink area chipped and stained. Bed was very comfortable for a cruise ship. we were amazed. Balcony area was nice, but nothing better than any other balcony room we have been in.

Port and Shore Excursions

I took the Bear and whale watching combo. Pricey but we truly had an amazing experience. They packed us in on the Whale Watching boat, and I was afraid we would be crawling all over each other trying to see the whales. But it was not that bad. They served a snack and hot beverages and sold a few other things. the whale watching was spectacular. We were able to see a pod of 13 whales bubble feeding together. they had an underwater mike and you could hear the whales as they sounded off. They went through the bubble feeding about 3 or 4 times in about 45 min before it stopped. Then in between the bubble feeding a juvenile humpback breached. Of course none of the cameras were ready for it and it did not happen again. we also got lots of fluke pictures. It was a great excursion. The bear portion was a beautiful walk and good stories. we did see a Grizzly at the very end. he was quite far away, but it was definitely exciting just to see one. I would say the experience was great, but the price was a bit high.

My husband sis Halibut fishing. He was able to catch one small halibut and then others that caught theirs were not interested in sending fish home, so they gave theirs to him. It was even pricier-120.00 to send the halibut home, but we did. Rated about a 4 for his experience.

We did the photo safari in Juneau. That was really amazing. We first went out to see the Mendenhall glacier up close. We were just across the lake from it. Our guide taught us how to use our cameras to get the best shots and took pictures of the couples if they wanted. There were arctic terns across the lake and she pointed out several of the plants and flowers around us. Then we were off in the boat to see Eagles, Seals, sealions and Whales. We caught the eagles en mass on one island. and got great shots of eagles feeding as well. We saw the sea lion perched on a buoy and some in the boat saw a few harbor seal. we missed those. Then we spotted humpback whales first. Then we lucked upon a small pod of about 5 killer whales. There was a mom with a baby and we got lots of great pictures. Then we saw another humpback and headed back. They gave us a CD with more photos of the native wildlife and sent us on our way. It was really a great excursion.

Went salmon fishing with celebrity excursion! great fun and caught several salmon. Service to ship home was na 80.00 minimum. We just did have enough fish. We will receive fish tomorrow.

Took the train excursion with a group called Chilkoot Charters. They use the White Pass railway and then they coach you elsewhere. We chose the Yukon adventure. It was supposed to be a 7 hour excursion but was more like 8 hrs. the train was delayed so we just made it back to the ship before we had to. we took the train north, then they picked us up and took us to a small area where we had lunch. nothing fancy, BBQ chicken, potato, slaw and tea/water. Then we had the sled dog ride ( 15 min) and visited the puppies and sled dogs. They also had a taxidermy Museum there that was rather amazing. After that we were bussed back to our ship. while we were being bussed around we were told the history of the area. it was quite interesting.
